Quantifier précisément le nombre de peintres dans le monde, en Europe ou en France est une tâche complexe, car cela dépend de plusieurs définitions et critères : inclut-on seulement les peintres professionnels, ceux inscrits à des organisations d’artistes, ou également les amateurs ? Cependant, voici quelques pistes pour approcher une estimation :

En France

Selon des données récentes, environ 30 000 à 40 000 artistes plasticiens (catégorie incluant les peintres, sculpteurs, etc.) sont enregistrés auprès de la Maison des Artistes ou de l’Agessa (associations françaises pour les artistes). Ce chiffre ne tient pas compte des amateurs, qui sont beaucoup plus nombreux.
